From a small flock in Hayley’s back garden…
Founded by Hayley Hubbard in 2022, Lotus Lamb & Sheep Sanctuary is a safe haven for exploited and abused livestock animals.
In 2020, Hayley successfully rescued a flock of ex-battery hens and gave them a home in her garden, which backed onto a field of sheep from a local farm.
Hayley and her children frequently visited the sheep in the field behind their garden, and over time they formed a strong bond with the flock, particularly after the farmer asked them to help bottle feed the lambs. However, Hayley knew that these sweet-natured animals were intended only for the slaughterhouse and so, after much fighting, convinced the farmer to sell Amy (available for ‘sponsor-sheep’)and a male sheep, Neville, to her.
After trouble finding a home for the sheep, the farmer offered to accommodate them back in his field, where Neville impregnated the ewes. This is typical of the meat industry, and Hayley ended up caring for her’s and the farmer’s sheep together. Eventually, Hayley decided she couldn’t continue looking after the flock knowing they were destined to be killed and the farmer agreed to sell the flock to Hayley, marking the beginning of the sanctuary.
Hayley planned to keep only two of the original flock and rehome the rest, but no adoptees came forward. Instead she began to document her journey on social media, where a local woman got in contact about a herd of neglected sheep. With the rescue of this flock and the arrival of the Shetland herd, Hayley quickly realised her garden was no longer fit to accommodate so many animals.
The sanctuary is now home to over 200 animals, including pigs, turkeys, chickens, horses, and, of course, the sheep.
Our Mission
At Lotus Lamb and Sheep Sanctuary, our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide life-long care for animals who have suffered from neglect and abuse.
As a vegan-run sanctuary, we staunchly oppose the exploitation of animals for human gain. We firmly believe that all animals deserve the right to their own life, bodily autonomy, and to receive unconditional love and care.
We also seek to inspire compassion and change perceptions of livestock animals through advocacy, helping to create a kinder world for all living beings.
We aim to create a safe and loving environment where our animals can lead joyful and fulfilling lives.
